Prof André van der Merwe is a distinguished South African urologist and surgeon, widely recognised for his leadership in transplant and reconstructive urology. He serves as Head of the Division of Urology at the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of Stellenbosch University and is an associate professor at Tygerberg Hospital, where he combines academic teaching with high‑complexity clinical practice. Trained in South Africa and internationally, he has pioneered advanced surgical techniques that have expanded the possibilities of modern urology, including laparoscopic procedures and complex reconstructive operations.

Van der Merwe gained international prominence in 2014 when he led the surgical team that performed the world’s first successful penis transplant, a breakthrough operation that restored urinary and reproductive function for a patient who had suffered penile amputation. His team later completed a second successful transplant, making the centre at Tygerberg Hospital the first in the world to achieve this milestone twice. His work not only demonstrates surgical innovation but also a deep commitment to improving quality of life for patients facing devastating injuries, and it continues to influence research and practice in vascularised composite allotransplantation and reconstructive urology.
