Social Change Assistance Trust (SCAT) is dedicated to empowering rural communities and strengthening civil society in South Africa. It works by partnering with grassroots structures known as Local Development Agencies (LDAs), which are community based organisations addressing local challenges such as poverty, inequality, and human rights issues. SCAT provides financial support through core grants, fundraising incentives, and development funds, enabling these organisations to operate sustainably while remaining accountable to the communities they serve. In addition to funding, SCAT promotes social justice, good governance, and community led development as key drivers of long-term change.

The website further highlights SCAT’s comprehensive support model, which combines funding with field support and capacity building. Programme officers work closely with partner organisations, offering mentoring, monitoring, and training in areas such as governance, financial management, and advocacy. Current focus areas include access to justice, gender-based violence, youth empowerment, food security, and climate resilience. Through these initiatives, SCAT aims to build strong, self-sustaining community institutions that can actively respond to local needs and contribute to a more equitable and democratic society.
