FoodForward SA is an organisation focused on reducing hunger and food waste by redistributing surplus food to vulnerable communities. Established in 2009, the organisation connects food producers, manufacturers, retailers, and farmers with a national network of beneficiary organisations that serve people in need. By recovering quality surplus food that would otherwise go to waste, FoodForward SA ensures that nutritious meals reach underserved communities across the country. Its mission is to reduce hunger by safely securing food and distributing it efficiently, working toward its vision of a South Africa without hunger.
Through innovative programmes such as warehouse food banking, virtual food banking, mobile rural depots, and nutrition initiatives for mothers and children, FoodForward SA has expanded its impact nationwide. The organisation works with more than 2,500 beneficiary organisations and currently provides food assistance to over 935,000 vulnerable people daily. In the 2024/2025 financial year alone, FoodForward SA distributed around 83 million meals, demonstrating how redistributing surplus food can address both food insecurity and environmental challenges caused by food waste.
